Welcome to Palestine

Do you know what Palestine is known for? If not read on….Palestine is a city in and the county seat of Anderson County in Texas, United States. It is known for its natural environment, including the dogwood floral blooming season, for having 23 historical sites on the National Register of Historic Places, and as the western terminus of the Texas State Railroad. This steam-and-diesel railroad museum operates tourist trains between Palestine and Rusk.

A trading post was established here about 1843 and some settlers gathered around it. In 1846, the Texas Legislature created Palestine to serve as a seat for the newly established Anderson County. James R. Fulton, Johnston Shelton, and William Bigelow were hired by the first Anderson County commissioners to survey the surrounding land and lay out a town site, consisting of a central courthouse square and the surrounding 24 blocks.

The International Railroad and the Houston and Great Northern Railroad first connected Palestine to the city of Hearne in 1872. By 1929 the Railroad line was abandoned during national restructuring but the Texas Legislature adapted the railroad as a state park in 1972, and was devoted to operating trains that showed some of the state’s railroad history. The Texas State Railroad is a state park that allows visitors to ride trains pulled by diesel and steam locomotives between the park’s Victorian-style depots and through the forests of East Texas. This short railroad line dates to 1883.

This place was amazing. The service was exceptional- our waiter paid very close attention to our needs, was very friendly and down to earth, and got absolutely everything we asked for perfect. The food was cooked to perfection, and this is no exaggeration. The steak was beautifully grilled, was cooked perfectly rare, and tasted amazing. I had the parmesan crusted tilapia, and it was so tender and flaky. The seasonings on everything, including the broccoli, were perfect. We also had the chicken fried steak and the fried catfush- both also cooked perfectly. The catfish had wonderful flavor, and the chicken fried steak was a good size, and not overly breaded like alot of places do. The fried pickles were also fantastic…perfectly breaded and fried. I give this place 5 stars, and I don’t do that often! For such a small place, it went way beyond our expectations. We will definitely be returning here every time we visit Palestine!

When they say, “never judge a book by its cover”, Home Grill Steakhouse fits the bill completely. The food was absolutely amazing. From the perfectly cooked and seasoned filet, to even the grilled veg and fried mushrooms; they were all incredible. 5 stars for no fluff, great service, and even better food!

I got the 12 oz ribeye. It was wonderfully seasoned and came with a herbed butter that complemented it perfectly. The grilled veggies were also perfectly seasoned and almost worth having as a meal themselves.

The staff and the food were amazing! You get large portions for a very, very reasonable price. My wife had the grilled chicken and I had the chicken fried sirloin. We just can’t say enough how great the staff was! We will certainly be back!
